Pyrazole derivatives of the general formula: STR1 wherein R1 and R2 are each hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, or n-butyl and X is hydrogen, hydroxy, methyl, methoxy, chlorine, or bromine, and their acid addition salts have antiviral activity against both RNA and DNA viruses such as myxoviruses, adenoviruses, rhinoviruses, and various viruses of the Herpes group. The compounds are active when administered orally or topically. They may be prepared by heating hydrazine hydrate or an alkyl hydrazine with a 3-benzofuryl ketone.
