Synthesis of chlorothioformates from xanthates

The Vilsmeier reagent derived from N-formylmorpholine produces chlorothioformates from primary and secondary alkyl xanthates. The major side products are the corresponding alkyl chlorides. Secondary alkyl chlorothioformates give lower yields due to their instability.
