, p. 1591 - 1599 (2015)
A highly efficient Pd/Fe3O4@C catalytic system has been developed for direct reductive amination of carbonyl compounds with nitroarenes in aqueous reaction medium. The catalyst was characterized by TEM, XRD, XPS and VSM. It was found that the catalyst showed a high activity for the one-pot direct reductive amination of aldehydes with nitroarenes in the presence of molecular hydrogen at mild temperature. Besides, the catalyst could be recovered in a facile manner from the reaction mixture and recycled six times without obvious loss in activity.
Mimicking transition metals in borrowing hydrogen from alcohols

Borrowing hydrogen from alcohols, storing it on a catalyst and subsequent transfer of the hydrogen from the catalyst to anin situgenerated imine is the hallmark of a transition metal mediated catalyticN-alkylation of amines. However, such a borrowing hydrogen mechanism with a transition metal free catalytic system which stores hydrogen molecules in the catalyst backbone is yet to be established. Herein, we demonstrate that a phenalenyl ligand can imitate the role of transition metals in storing and transferring hydrogen molecules leading to borrowing hydrogen mediated alkylation of anilines by alcohols including a wide range of substrate scope. A close inspection of the mechanistic pathway by characterizing several intermediates through various spectroscopic techniques, deuterium labelling experiments, and DFT study concluded that the phenalenyl radical based backbone sequentially adds H+, H˙ and an electron through a dearomatization process which are subsequently used as reducing equivalents to the C-N double bond in a catalytic fashion.

Although widely used in catalysis, the multistep syntheses and high loadings typically employed are limiting broader implementation of highly active tailor-made arylborane Lewis acids and Lewis pairs. Attempts at developing recyclable systems have thus far met with limited success, as general and versatile platforms are yet to be developed. We demonstrate a novel approach that is based on the excellent control and functional group tolerance of ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The ROMP of highly Lewis acidic borane-functionalized phenylnorbornenes afforded both a soluble linear copolymer and a cross-linked organogel. The polymers proved highly efficient as recyclable catalysts in the reductive N-alkylation of arylamines under mild conditions and at exceptionally low catalyst loadings. The modular design presented herein can be readily adapted to other finely tuned triarylboranes, enabling wide applications of ROMP-borane polymers as well-defined supported organocatalysts.
Catalyst-Free Reductive Coupling of Aromatic and Aliphatic Nitro Compounds with Organohalides

supporting information, p. 6713 - 6717 (2019/04/14)
A rare reductive coupling of nitro compounds with organohalides has been realized. The reaction is initiated by a partial reduction of the nitro group to a nitrenoid intermediate. Therefore, not only aromatic but also aliphatic nitro compounds are efficiently transformed into monoalkylated amines, with organohalides as the alkylating agent. Given the innate reactivity of the nitrenoid, a catalyst is not required, resulting in a high tolerance for aryl halide substituents in both starting materials.
Cobalt-Rhodium Heterobimetallic Nanoparticle-Catalyzed N-Alkylation of Amines with Alcohols to Secondary and Tertiary Amines

, p. 8533 - 8542 (2018/07/30)
Without the requirement for base or other additives, Co2Rh2/C can selectively catalyze both mono- and bis-N-alkylation through the coupling of simple alcohols with amines, yielding a range of secondary and tertiary amines in good to excellent isolated yields. The reaction can be applied to benzyl alcohol with optically active 1-phenylethan-1-amines, and secondary amines were isolated in quantitative yields with an excellent enantiomeric excess (ee > 94%). Selectivity is achieved by varying the reaction temperature and amount of catalyst used. This catalytic system has several advantages including eco-friendliness and a simple workup procedure. The catalyst can be successfully recovered and reused ten times without any significant loss of activity.

, p. 15 - 22 (2013/12/04)
We described here a method to stabilize Pd(0) on the surface of hollow magnetic mesoporous spheres (HMMS), with Fe3O4 nanoparticles embedded in the mesoporous shell. The catalyst was characterized by TEM, XRD and VSM. It was found that the catalyst showed a high activity for the one-pot direct reductive amination of aldehydes with nitroarenes in the presence of molecular hydrogen in ethanol, even at room temperature. Besides, the catalyst could be recovered in a facile manner from the reaction mixture and recycled six times without loss in activity.

, p. 40 - 44 (2013/02/22)
A high-performance palladium-based catalyst has been prepared by the co-precipitation method. The catalyst was characterized by TEM, XRD, VSM and ICP. It was found that the catalyst showed a high activity for the one-pot direct reductive amination of aldehydes with nitroarenes in the presence of molecular hydrogen in ethanol, even at room temperature. Furthermore, the catalyst was easily recovered by applying an external magnet and reused for eight cycles without significant loss of activity.
Polymeric bimetallic catalyst-promoted in-water dehydrative alkylation of ammonia and amines with alcohols

, p. 2093 - 2100 (2013/08/23)
A dehydrative alkylation with three kinds of Ir/B heterobimetallic polymeric catalysts in water is reported. The polymeric heterobimetallic catalysts were readily prepared by ionic convolution of a poly(catechol borate) and iridium complexes. The N-alkylation of ammonia and amines with alcohols, as alkylating agents, was carried out with a heterogeneous catalyst (1 mol% Ir) at 100 °C without the use of organic solvents under aerobic and aqueous conditions to afford the corresponding alkylated amines in high yield. An in-water dehydrative alkylation with a novel heterobimetallic polymeric catalyst is described. Thus, a boron-iridium heterobimetallic polymeric catalyst was prepared by ionic convolution of a poly(catechol borate) and an iridium complex. The alkylation of ammonia and amines with alcohols, alkylating agents, was performed with 1 mol % Ir of the heterogeneous catalyst in water without the use of organic solvents under aerobic conditions to give the corresponding alkylated amines.
