General Description
2,4-dichloro-1-[2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)ethenyl]benzene is a chemical compound that is made up of benzene with two chlorine atoms attached at the 2,4 positions, and a 1-[2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)ethenyl] group attached at the 1 position. It is also known as DDE, and is a breakdown product of the pesticide DDT. DDE is persistent in the environment and can accumulate in the fatty tissues of animals, including humans. It is classified as a probable human carcinogen and has been linked to reproductive and developmental effects, as well as harmful effects on the endocrine system. Due to its potential harmful effects, DDE has been banned or heavily restricted in many countries.
