Condensation of N,N'-ethanediylbisbenzamide (I) with aldehydes in 1:2 molar proportions in hot acetic acid results in 3,3'-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis (II).Dehydrogenation of II using nitrobenzene, potassium permanganate in acetone or palladium-charcoal leads to 3,3'-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis (V).All the compounds have been characterised by elemental analyses and mass, IR and 1H NMR spectral data.
