Density Studies in Terephthalylidene bis-p-n-Octylaniline TBOA

The temperature dependence of density ρ, in terephthalylidene bis-p-n-octylaniline (TBOA) is carried out to probe the phase transitions, associated volume jumps, order of the transitions and pretransitional effects.The compound exhibits smectic A, smectic C, smectic F, smectic G and smectic H phases.The smectic A-isotropic and smectic F-smectic C are found to be first order and the calculated thermal expansion coefficient, α, also supported the density results.
