Friedel-Crafts Condensation of Lactone of cis-2-Hydroxy-3-methylcyclopentaneacetic Acid with Aromatic Hydrocarbons

The catalysed condensation of the title lactone (I) with benzene affords a mixture of isomeric acids in 60percent yield from which 4-methyl-2-phenyl-(II, R=H)- and 4-methyl-3-phenyl-(III, R=H)-cyclopentaneacetic acids have been isolated.Similar condensation of I with toluene affords a stereoisomeric mixture of acids (II, R=CH3) and (III, R=CH3).In both the cases, a small amount of 3-methylcyclopentaneacetic acid formed by the reduction of the lactone (I), has also been isolated.The formation of acids (II) and (III) occurs by the extensive rearrangement of the resulting carbonium ion.
