The ring-chain equilibrium and kinetics in O,O'-transfer of polynitroaryl groups in the series of O-(nitrophenyl) derivatives of tropolone and its analogs were studied by UV and NMR spectroscopy. The crystal structure and molecular structure of O-(2',4',6'-trinitrophenyl)tropolone, S-(2',4',6'-trinitrophenyl)thiotropone, and O-(2'-nitro-4'-trifluoromethylsulfonylphenyl)-3,5,7-trimethyltropolone were determined by x-ray crystallographic analysis.Comparison of the geometric characteristics of these compounds and of the previously investigated O-(2',4',6'-trinitrophenyl)and O-(2',6'-dinitrophenyl) derivatives of 3,5,7-trimethyltropolone revealed an intramolecular transarylation path.
