General Description

Acetohydroxamic acid (AHA) is a chelating agent and urinary tract antibacterial agent used in the treatment of chronic urinary tract infections. It functions by inhibiting the enzyme urease, which is responsible for the breakdown of urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. By lowering the levels of ammonia in the urine, AHA can prevent the formation of struvite kidney stones and decrease the likelihood of urinary tract infections caused by urease-producing bacteria. AHA is also being studied for its potential use in the treatment of certain types of cancer, as it has been shown to inhibit the growth of tumor cells in laboratory studies. However, it is important to note that AHA can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite, and should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
