The reaction of diphenydiazomethane with phenylpropionitrile gave 4-cyano-3,3,5-triphenylpyrazolenine.The thermal, acid-catalyzed and photolytic isomerization of this compound were studied.The thermal and photolytic decomposition of 4-cyano-3,3,5-triphenylpyrazolenine gave previously unreported 1-cyano-2,3,3-triphenylcyclopropene, which isomerizes at 200 deg C to 1-cyano-2,3-diphenylindene.
