Glycine, N-(methoxythioxomethyl)-N-methyl-, also known as methomyl, is a synthetic organophosphorus pesticide primarily used as an insecticide and acaricide. It is a white crystalline solid with the chemical formula C5H10N2O2S. Methomyl works by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system in insects. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine, causing overstimulation and ultimately paralysis and death of the target pests. Methomyl is effective against a wide range of insects, including aphids, whiteflies, and mites, and is used in agriculture to protect crops from damage. However, due to its high toxicity to humans and the environment, its use has been restricted or banned in several countries.
