Treatment of aryl phenylsulfinates 5 (prepared from phenols 1 by reaction with phenylsulfinyl chloride) with AlCl3 at 25°C furnishes good yields of the (phenylsulfinyl)phenols 2 via a 'thia-Fries rearrangement'.
