The pyrolysis of limonene has been re-examined.It involves a high activation energy process in which a biradical is produced initially. This biradical can reform limonene, give a new optically active product, 1,5-dimethyl-5-vinylcyclohexene, or undergo a series of rearrangements to yield a pyrolysis mixture similar to that obtained on pyrolysis of α-pinene.
