Chlorocarbene, also known as dichlorocarbene or CCl2, is a highly reactive, colorless gas with a pungent odor. It is a dihalomethyl compound, consisting of a carbon atom bonded to two chlorine atoms. Chlorocarbene is generated through the decomposition of diazomethane or the reaction of chloroform with a strong base. Due to its high reactivity, it readily undergoes addition reactions with alkenes, alkynes, and other unsaturated compounds, leading to the formation of various chlorinated products. It is also known to be a potent carcinogen and mutagen, making it hazardous to handle and necessitating strict safety precautions during its use.
