This report investigates homoleptic iron(II) complexes of thiazolinyl analogues of chiral PyBox tridentate ligands: 2,6-bis(4-phenyl-4,5-dihydrothiazol-2-yl)pyridine (L1Ph), 2,6-bis(4-isopropyl-4,5-dihydrothiazol-2-yl)pyridine (L1iPr), and 2,6-bis(4-tert-butyl-4,5-dihydrothiazol-2-yl)pyridine (L1t-Bu). Crystallographic data imply the larger and more flexible thiazolinyl rings reduce steric clashes between the R substituents in homochiral [Fe((R)-L1R)2]2+ or [Fe((S)-L1R)2]2+ (R = Ph, iPr, or t-Bu), compared to their PyBox (L2R) analogues. Conversely, the larger heterocyclic S atoms are in close contact with the R substituents in heterochiral [Fe((R)-L1Ph)((S)-L1Ph)]2+, giving it a more sterically hindered ligand environment than that in [Fe((R)-L2Ph)((S)-L2Ph)]2+ (L2Ph = 2,6-bis(4-phenyl-4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)pyridine). Preformed [Fe((R)-L1Ph)((S)-L1Ph)]2+ and [Fe((R)-L1iPr)((S)-L1iPr)]2+ do not racemize by ligand redistribution in CD3CN solution, but homochiral [Fe(L1iPr)2]2+ and [Fe(L1t-Bu)2]2+ both undergo partial ligand displacement in that solvent. Homochiral [Fe(L1Ph)2]2+ and [Fe(L1iPr)2]2+ exhibit spin-crossover equilibria in CD3CN, centered at 344 ± 6 K and 277 ± 1 K respectively, while their heterochiral congeners are essentially low-spin within the liquid range of the solvent. These data imply that the diastereomers of [Fe(L1Ph)2]2+ and [Fe(L1iPr)2]2+ show a greater difference in their spin-state behaviors than was previous found for [Fe(L2Ph)2]2+. Gas-phase DFT calculations (B86PW91/def2-SVP) of the [Fe(L1R)2]2+ and [Fe(L2R)2]2+ complexes reproduce most of the observed trends, but they overstabilize the high-spin state of SCO-active [Fe(L1iPr)2]2+ by ca. 1.5 kcal mol-1. This might reflect the influence of intramolecular dispersion interactions on the spin states of these compounds. Attempts to model this with the dispersion-corrected functionals B97-D2 or PBE-D3 were less successful than our original protocol, confirming that the spin states of sterically hindered molecules are a challenging computational problem.

A new technique for the ex situ generation of carbon monoxide (CO) and its efficient incorporation in palladium catalyzed carbonylation reactions was achieved using a simple sealed two-chamber system. The ex situ generation of CO was derived by a palladium catalyzed decarbonylation of tertiary acid chlorides using a catalyst originating from Pd(dba)2 and P(tBu)3. Preliminary studies using pivaloyl chloride as the CO-precursor provided an alternative approach for the aminocarbonylation of 2-pyridyl tosylate derivatives using only 1.5 equiv of CO. Further design of the acid chloride CO-precursor led to the development of a new solid, stable, and easy to handle source of CO for chemical transformations. The synthesis of this CO-precursor also provided an entry point for the late installment of an isotopically carbon-labeled acid chloride for the subsequent release of gaseous [ 13C]CO. In combination with studies aimed toward application of CO as the limiting reagent, this method provided highly efficient palladium catalyzed aminocarbonylations with CO-incorporations up to 96%. The ex situ generated CO and the two-chamber system were tested in the synthesis of several compounds of pharmaceutical interest and all of them were labeled as their [ 13C]carbonyl counterparts in good to excellent yields based on limiting CO. Finally, palladium catalyzed decarbonylation at room temperature also allowed for a successful double carbonylation. This new protocol provides a facile and clean source of gaseous CO, which is safely handled and stored. Furthermore, since the CO is generated ex situ, excellent functional group tolerance is secured in the carbonylation chamber. Finally, CO is only generated and released in minute amounts, hence, eliminating the need for specialized equipment such as CO-detectors and equipment for running high pressure reactions.
Rational design of sterically and electronically easily tunable chiral bisimidazolines and their applications in dual lewis acid/brensted base catalysis for highly enantioselective nitroaldol (Henry) reactions

A new addition to the rational design of sterically and electrically easily tunable chiral bis(imidazoline) ligands from chiral amino alcohols has been developed. Vast structural variation of chiral bis(imidazoline) ligands can be simply achieved by the choice of both the 1,2-amino alcohol and its N-1 R 1 substituent. A small library of chiral bisimidazolines (1a-h) has been constructed. The method has provided an easy and simplified route to a diverse set of air-stable and water-tolerant chiral bis(imidazoline) ligands on 10 g scales. The dual Lewis Acid/Bronsted base catalytic system generated from the (5)-1a/Cu(OTf)2 complex and Et3N was able to catalyze Henry reactions between aldehydes and nitromethane effectively at room temperature, and also to tolerate a wide scope of aldehydes with excellent enantiomeric excesses. Not only aromatic aldehydes but also aliphatic aldehydes afforded the nitroalcohol products, with enantiomeric excesses in the 93-98% range. This dual catalytic system is among the most effective systems so far reported for the asymmetric parent Henry reactions. This work also represents the first members of the class of chiral bisimidazolines to have been demonstrated to achieve excellent enantioselectivities.

A T-shaped micro reactor was used for the optimisation of reaction conditions for the enantioselective silylcyanation of benzaldehyde catalysed by lanthanide-pybox complexes. Compared to a conventional batch procedure, higher conversion was observed within shorter reaction time. The micro reactor process involving Lu(III) afforded essentially the same enantioselectivity as the batch process (73 vs 76% ee), whereas the enantioselectivity was lower in the micro reactor for catalysts containing Yb(III) (53 compared to 72%). Ce(III) provided very low selectivity in both types of processes (1 and 11% ee, respectively). A study of the effect of additives showed that the enantioselectivity in the Yb catalysed reaction performed in the micro reactor could be increased to 66%, whereas only a minor improvement, to 78% ee, was observed in the reaction with Lu.
