Reactions of furancarboxylic acids and esters as well as halogen furfurals with SF4-HF-Cl2(Br2) and SF4-HF-S2Cl2 have been studied. On treatment of furan derivatives with the SF4-HF-Cl2 system, addition of a stoichiometric equivalent of > across the 2,5-positions of the furan ring followed by displacement of chlorine to side chaine takes place. The reactions of furancarboxylic acids with the SF4-HF-Cl2 system result in addition of stoichiometric equivalent of > to the furan ring and subsequent replacement of the SSCl-group by fluorine.
