Thallium(III) trifluoroacetate in ether causes the cyclization of α-terpineol to give (+/-)-4α-hydroxypinol as the major product. (+/-)-4β-Hydroxypinol and 2-hydroxy-1,8-cineole were also found in slight amounts.
