The action of morpholine on the oxides of substituted trans-benzylideneacetophenones in acetonitrile leads to opening of the oxide ring on the side of the β-carbon atom. The dependence of the rate constants on the polar effect of the substituents at the central carbon atom has V-shaped character and not linear as in methanol .The results are explained by an increase on the "compactness" of the transition state in the less electrophilic solvent acetonitrile.
