Usage

General Description

(E)-N,N,N-trimethyl-2-(5-nitrofuran-2-yl)ethenaminium bromide, also known as Ethidium bromide, is a chemical commonly used in molecular biology as a fluorescent dye to stain nucleic acids. It is able to intercalate between DNA or RNA base pairs, making it a useful tool for visualizing and quantifying nucleic acids in gel electrophoresis. However, it is also a known mutagen and potential carcinogen, raising concerns about its use and disposal. Ethidium bromide has a characteristic orange fluorescence when bound to DNA, and is commonly used in laboratories for studies involving nucleic acids.
