Anion and Cation Effects on Anion-Templated Assembly of Tetrahydroxytriptycene
White, Nicholas G.,Maclachlan, Mark J.
, p. 5629 - 5636 (2015)
A tetrahydroxytriptycene ligand 1 assembles through O-H···anion hydrogen bonds into a range of different structures. With tetrabutylammonium bromide, 1 forms a stable nanotube structure that is supported by O-H···anion hydrogen bonds, but its space is occupied by the large cation. In an effort to produce the nanotubes with different cations and anions, 1 was crystallized with different salts. The reaction of 1 with tetraethylammonium bromide gives a 2D net structure, while 1 and tetrapropylammonium bromide give a discrete 1:2 complex. Attempting to co-crystallize 1 and tetramethylammonium bromide gave crystals of an oxidized quinone form of the ligand. When 1 was crystallized with tetrabutylammonium terephthalate, two different one-dimensional anion coordination polymers were obtained, depending on the crystallization solvent: acetonitrile gave a zigzag polymer, while methanol gave a linear structure. In both cases, the tetrabutylammonium cations fill the gaps between the 1D polymers, giving a layered 2D morphology. The wide range of architectures prepared from a relatively simple ligand illustrates the potential utility of O-H···anion interactions for constructing solid-state materials.

We report here a set of fluorescent supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) that incorporate aggregation-induced emission (AIE) units within their frameworks. The fluorescent SOFs of this study were constructed by linking the tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-ba

A series of bis-thiourea-functionalized [n]polynorbornane hosts (1-6) with increasing size were synthesized and their anion-binding properties were evaluated by using 1HNMR spectroscopic titration and Job's plot analysis. The larger bis-thiourea-[3]polynorbornane scaffolds 4 and 5 bound acetate in a 1:1 (cooperative) arrangement, whereas the corresponding smaller norbornane host 2, identical in preorganization, bound acetate in a 1:2 (independent) arrangement. In contrast, the size of the framework had no influence on the binding of dihydrogenphosphate. These results clearly highlight the subtle influence that the framework itself can have on host-guest interactions. One anion or two? A series of bis-thiourea-functionalized [n]polynorbornane hosts (1-6) with increasing size were synthesized and their anion-binding properties were evaluated by using 1HNMR spectroscopic titration and Job's plot analysis. Our results highlight the subtle influence that the framework itself can have on host-guest interactions.

The binding affinities of three new tetraaza[2]arene[2]triazine based macrocycles anchoring one (AC1A) and two (AC2A and Me4AC2A) l-alanine amino acid units for five aromatic carboxylate anions (bz-, ph 2-, iph2-, tph2- and btc3-) were investigated in DMSO-d6. 1H NMR titrations revealed that the AC1A and AC2A receptors exhibit comparable anion affinities, suggesting that the two l-alanine binding units in AC2A are not simultaneously involved in the anion recognition as indicated by molecular dynamics simulations carried out for selected AC1A and AC2A associations using the AMBER force field (GAFF). New force field parameters were developed in order to mimic the structural singularity derived from the N-H macrocyclic bridges.
