In fluorosulphonic acid the mixture of isomeric pentamethylbicycloheptenones obtained during the photolysis of 2,3,4,6,7-pentamethyltropone is converted into the 1-(4-hydroxy-2,3,5,6-tetramethylphenyl)ethylium salts.Neutralization of an acidic solution of the latter leads to ring enlargement with the formation of the initial 2,3,4,6,7-pentamethyltropone.
