Abstract: The alkylation of alkyl-substituted 1,1'-dihydroxy-2,2'-biimidazoles with an equimolar amount of methyl iodide occurs exclusively at the imidazole nitrogen atom, while with a three-fold excess of methyl iodide, both the imidazole nitrogen atom and two hydroxy groups are involved in alkylation. The reaction of 1,1'-dihydroxy-2,2'-biimidazoles with P(OMe)3 forms the corresponding 2,2'-biimidazoles.
