The permanent merocyanines and the photomerocyanines obtained by uv irradiation of spirochromenes are easily hydrolyzed.In the oxazolidine and oxazine series, aminoesters whose configuration has been checked by 1H nmr have been isolated.Their formation involves a tetrahedral intermediate similar to those postulated in the hydrolysis of oxazolinium and oxazinium salts.These aminoesters are themselves easily transformed into coumarins.In the thiazolidine and thiazine series the permanent merocyanines are hydrolyzed into phenols by way of a retro Bertagnini-Perkin reaction.
