Aminopterin Sodium, also known as 4-aminopteroylglutamic acid sodium salt, is a synthetic folic acid antagonist that was initially developed as an anti-cancer drug. It works by inhibiting the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which is crucial for the synthesis of DNA and RNA, thereby preventing the proliferation of rapidly dividing cells. Aminopterin Sodium was one of the first chemotherapy drugs and has been largely replaced by other, less toxic agents in modern cancer treatment. It is a white crystalline powder that is soluble in water and has a molecular formula of C19H17N7NaO6. Due to its teratogenic effects, it is also used in medical abortions and as a rodenticide.
