It is a colorless, oily liquid that is soluble in organic solvents. TEPP was historically used as an insecticide due to its ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme crucial for nerve impulse transmission. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine at nerve synapses, causing overstimulation and paralysis in insects. However, its use has been largely discontinued due to its high toxicity to mammals, including humans, and its persistence in the environment. TEPP is now considered an obsolete pesticide and is subject to strict regulations.
