Hydrolysis of diethyl 2-cyano-3-methylcyclohex-1-ene-1,3-dicarboxylate yields an anhydride-acid with two structural possibilities, viz. a 1,2-enedioic anhydride (4) and a 2,3-anhydride (5).The choice of the former has been indicated, since the product exhibits a characteristic aging behavior in its UV spectrum in protic solvents similar to that of other 1,2-enedioic anhydrides.
