The Diels-Alder reaction of 4-cyano-, 4-methoxycarbonyl-, and 4-acetyl-2(1H)-pyridones (I, II, and IV) with 1,3-butadiene derivatives (III and V) were carried out to give 4a-substituted tetrahydro-1(2H)-isoquinolone derivatives (VI-IX, XV, XIX, and XX).
