New nickel ethylene oligomerization catalysts bearing bidentate P,N-phosphinopyridine ligands with different substituents a to phosphorus

Phosphinopyridine lignads were used for the determination of their corresponding paramagnetic Ni(II) complexes as catalyst precusors for the oligomerization of ethylene using ALEtCl2 or methylalumoxane (MAO) as cocatalyst. X-ray diffraction was used for determining the planar coordination geometry about the metal of Ni complexes. It was found that for P,N ligands an increase in the degree of alkyl substitution at the carbon α to P tends to lead to higher activities and more selective formation of α-olefins. The results show that by using MAO as cocatalyst (800 equiv), selectivity to 1-butene within the C4 fraction increased to 38% and 37% for differnt complexes.
