Description
Radium carbonate, with the molecular formula RaCO3, is a soluble radium compound that is more soluble than its barium counterpart. It is characterized by its ability to concentrate in the soluble fraction during fractional precipitation of barium-radium mixtures and is soluble in dilute acids and concentrated ammonium carbonate solution.
Uses
Used in Medicine:
Radium carbonate is used as a radioactive material in medical applications, particularly for the treatment of cancer. Its radioactivity allows for targeted radiation therapy to destroy cancer cells.
Used in Preparation of Radium Compounds:
Radium carbonate serves as a precursor in the production of other radium compounds, which can be utilized in various industrial and research applications. Its solubility properties make it a suitable starting material for the synthesis of these compounds.
Preparation
In general, RaCO3 is prepared in conjunction
with BaCO3 and then separated. Radium sulfate is
the most insoluble of the alkaline earth sulfates and probably
the most insoluble radium compound known.Radium carbonate may also be prepared by precipitation
from neutral or weakly alkaline solutions of radium
salts with a solution of ammonium carbonate. Gram
quantities of radiumhave been recovered from a concentrated
solution of radium nitrate by precipitation as the
carbonate. The radium nitrate solution was adjusted to
pH 9.2-9.5 with concentrated ammonium hydroxide.
Carbon dioxide gas was bubbled into the solution until
the pH was just slightly above 7.0. To insure complete
precipitation of radium carbonate, ethyl alcohol
and some additional ammonium hydroxide solution
were added. The radium carbonate was filtered and
washed with 90% ethyl alcohol. It was first dried at
110°C to remove the alcohol and weighed as RaCO3.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 7116-98-5 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 7,1,1 and 6 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 9 and 8 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 7116-98:
(6*7)+(5*1)+(4*1)+(3*6)+(2*9)+(1*8)=95
95 % 10 = 5
So 7116-98-5 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
