3-Methoxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4H-furo-benzopyran-4-one, 2, has been synthesized starting from 7-hydroxy-3,4'-dimethoxyflavone, 3. 3, on allylation followed by Claisen migration, gave 8-allyl-7-hydroxy-3,4'-dimethoxyflavone, 5; the latter on oxidation with OsO4-KIO4, followed by cyclisation of the intermediate aldehyde with PPA gave 2.Nuclear allylation of 3 gave 7-allyloxy-3,4'-dimethoxyflavone, 4, 8-allyl-7-allyloxy-3,4'-dimethoxyflavone, 6, 6,8-diallyl-7-hydroxy-3,4'-dimethoxyflavone, 7, 6-allyl-7-hydroxy-3,4'-dimethoxyflavone, 10, and 8-allyl-7-hydroxy-3,4'-dimethoxyflavone , 5. 10 has also been synthesized from 3 by iodination followed by allylation and Claisen migration with simultaneous deiodination. 6-Methoxy-7-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5H-furobenzopyran-5-one, 11, an isomer of 2, has also been synthesized from 10.
