A more sustainable isothiocyanate synthesis by amine catalyzed sulfurization of isocyanides with elemental sulfur

Isothiocyanates (ITCs) are typically prepared using amines and highly toxic reagents such as thiophosgene, its derivatives, or CS2. In this work, an investigation of a multicomponent reaction (MCR) using isocyanides, elemental sulfur and amines revealed that isocyanides can be converted to isothiocyanates using sulfur and catalytic amounts of amine bases, especially DBU (down to 2 mol%). This new catalytic reaction was optimized in terms of sustainability, especially considering benign solvents such as Cyrene or γ-butyrolactone (GBL) under moderate heating (40 °C). Purification by column chromatography was further optimized to generate less waste by maintaining high purity of the product. Thus, E-factors as low as 0.989 were achieved and the versatility of this straightforward procedure was shown by converting 20 different isocyanides under catalytic conditions, while obtaining moderate to high yields (34-95%). Paragraph 0054, (2016/12/12)
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further improve durability of a dye-sensitized solar cell. SOLUTION: A dye-sensitized solar cell module 10 includes a plurality of dye-sensitized solar cells 40. Each of the dye-sensitized solar cells 40 includes: a photoelectrode 20 in which a porous semiconductor layer 24 containing an organic sensitizing dye is provided on a transparent conductive substrate 14; a counter electrode 30 arranged so as to face the photoelectrode 20; and an electrolyte layer 26 interposed between the photoelectrode 20 and the counter electrode 30 and containing an electrolytic solution. The organic sensitizing dye has a structure in which a donor moiety and an acceptor moiety are bonded together. The acceptor moiety has a rhodanine-based skeleton, and two or more carboxy groups are bonded to one or more of nitrogen atoms of the rhodanine-based skeleton via an aryl group. Page/Page column 51-52, (2010/11/24)
Water-soluble discrete multi-biotin-containing compounds with at least three (3) biotin moieties are disclosed. The water-soluble biotin-containing compounds may additionally comprise one or more moieties that confer resistance to cleavage by biotinidase or that is cleavable in vitro or in vivo. The discrete multi-biotin-containing compounds may include a reactive moiety that provides a site for reaction with yet another moiety, such as a targeting, diagnostic or therapeutic functional moiety. Biotinylation reagents comprising water-soluble linker moieties are also disclosed and may additionally comprise a biotinidase protective group. Methods for amplifying the number of sites for binding biotin-binding proteins at a selected target using multi-biotin compounds also are disclosed.
