A simple and efficient method for constructing 4-arylidene-5-imidazolones was developed using a phosphinecatalyzed tandem umpolung addition and intramolecular cyclization of amidine pronucleophiles on arylpropiolates. (Chemical Equation Presented) A facile microwave-assisted synthesis of imidazol-5(4H)-one derivatives is accomplished via reactions of 4-arylmethylene-2-phenyloxazol-5(4H)-ones with urea (or ammonium acetate) in ethylene glycol. The cascade reaction is simple to perform and occurs under mild conditions with broad scope of applicability.
