Polyhalogenated benzotrifluorides can be reacted with chlorides from the series of Friedel-Crafts catalysts to give the corresponding benzotrichlorides, which can be hydrolysed by water in the presence of iron(III) chloride to give the corresponding benzoyl chlorides.
