A fluorescent heteroditopic host for ion pairs and zwitterionic species has been synthesized. Its affinity towards a series of anions, cations and ion pairs in acetonitrile has been assessed, and the spectroscopic response has been evaluated. Solid-liquid extraction experiments of inorganic salts, α-amino acids and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) into acetonitrile solutions were performed, and the resulting complexes were analyzed by UV/Vis absorption, fluorescence and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The discrimination patterns observed have been rationalized in terms of the molecular topologies of the host and guests. Catching two balls: A BODIPY derivative bearing two independent yet complimentary hosts for anions and cations displays distinct absorption and fluorescence signalling patterns for different alkali metal halides. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) compounds, dye2 and dye3, with a rotatable N-N single bond and aza-crown-ether, have been synthesized. The fluorescence intensities of both dyes are very weak in THF, while become extraordinarily strong in a mixture of H2O-THF (v/v 95%). They are increased by 88.9 and 70.7 times, respectively, indicating enhanced blue-green fluorescence emissions. The λem of these two compounds in different states has been well studied. Besides this, dye1 and dye2 were characterized by single crystal X-ray structural determination. An improved method for the synthesis of formyl derivatives of N - Methylbenzoazacrown ethers is proposed. They are prepared in up to 68% yields over fewer steps and with a much shorter time required for the last step. The stability constants of complexes formed by N-methylbenzoazacrown ethers and their structural analogs with alkali metal, alkaline - Earth metal and ammonium cations were determined by 1H NMR titration in CD3CN. High stability of complexes of N-methyl derivatives of benzoazacrown ethers is demonstrated, comparable with or even exceeding the stability of benzocrown-ether complexes and markedly exceeding the stability of complexes of phenylazacrown ethers with the same macrocycle size. The structures of azacrown ethers and their complexes with Ba(ClO4)2 were studied by X-ray diffraction. A high degree of pre-organization of N - Methylbenzoazacrown ethers toward the formation of complexes with metal and ammonium cations was noted, which is due to the clear-cut pyramidal geometry of the nitrogen atom and the orientation of the lone electron pairs (LEPs) of most heteroatoms towards the centre of the macroheterocycle. New dyes with an ion-selective crown ether system, the complexation of which with cations influences the ground and excited states of the chromophore to a different extent, have been synthesized.Different types of alkali/alkaline earth metal ions cause different colour changes, significant effects being normally observed with cations fitting selectively into the crown ether units with cromophores of azo dyes (1-3, 8a, b, 22, 24), naphthol blue (10), phenol blue (11), stilbene dyes (14a, b), (mero)cyanines (16, 17a, b), and of Koenig's salt (19, 20).Chromophores bound to open chain oligoethylene glycol ethers are also described.The remarkable changes of light absorption in the course of complexation of some of the dyes are discussed in terms of donor participation of the auxochrome or antiauxochrome.
