Decanedioic acid hydrogen 1-(2-ethylhexyl) ester, also known as di(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate or DEHS, is a synthetic organic compound primarily used as a plasticizer in various industrial applications. It is an oily, colorless liquid with the chemical formula C26H50O4. DEHS is derived from the esterification of sebacic acid and 2-ethylhexanol, resulting in a high molecular weight ester with excellent plasticizing properties. This chemical is widely used in the production of flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products, such as hoses, films, and cables, due to its ability to enhance flexibility, durability, and resistance to degradation. However, concerns have been raised regarding its potential health and environmental impacts, as it can leach out of products over time and may have endocrine-disrupting effects. As a result, its use is being phased out in some applications, and safer alternatives are being sought.
