A 7-alkyl-8-hydroxyquinoline is a compound which is important as an extracting agent to be used for solvent extraction of metal ions of e.g. copper, nickel or cobalt from an aqueous solution containing such metal ions. The present invention provides a method for producing a 7-alkyl-8-hydroxyquinoline, whereby such a 7-alkyl-8-hydroxyquinoline can be obtained in high purity and in good yield. Namely, the present invention provides a method for producing a 7-alkyl-8-hydroxyquinoline, which comprises reducing a 7-alkenyl-8-hydroxyquinoline under hydrogen pressure in the presence of an inorganic base and a Group VIII metal catalyst. In the present invention, no substantial hydrogenation of the hetero ring takes place, and an adequate reaction rate can be obtained. Thus, it is an industrially extremely advantageous and inexpensive method.
