Reactions of a methylcopper complex CH3Cu(PPh3)2(diethyl ether)0.5 (PPh3 = triphenylphosphine) with active N-H compounds HNR1R2 give the corresponding copper derivatives formulated as R1R2NCu(PPh3)n (n = 2 for R1R2N = phthalimido, succinimido, N-phenylacetamido (4), acrylamido, phenylamido, and 2-oxo-1-pyrrolidinyl; n = 1 for R1R2N = acetamido). The IR and NMR spectroscopic data of the complexes support the bonding of the R1R2N group to Cu through nitrogen. The reactions of the Cu(I)-N complexes with alkyl and aryl halides (RX) afford the corresponding N-substituted compounds RNR1R2 in high yields.
