Antibacterial Activity of a New Flavone Glycoside from the Stems of Holmskioldia sanguinea Retz.

A new flavone glycoside was isolated from ethanolic extract of stem parts of Holmskioldia sanguinea Retz. Its structure was characterized as 3,4′-dihydroxy-5,7-dimethoxyflavone-3-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl(1→4)-O-β-D-arabinopyranosyl-4′-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (1) by colour reactions, chemical degradation and spectroscopic analysis. Antibacterial activity of compound 1 was evaluated against various Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria showing a significant effects.

The present paper reports the isolation and structure elucidation of a new compound A identified as 5,7,4′-trihydroxy-8-methoxy flavanone-4′- α-L-rhamno-pyranosyl-7-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→3) -O-β-D-galactopyranoside along with two known compounds B and C identified as chrysoeriol and tricin, respectively from the methanolic extract of the defatted seeds of the plant by various colour reactions, chemical degradation and spectral analysis.

A new allelochemical (1), m.p. 282-284 °C, m.f. C31H 36O19, [M]+ 712 (FABMS), has been isolated from methanolic extract of the seeds of Adenanthera pavonina Linn. alongwith two known compounds 2',4',7-trihydroxy isoflavone and isovitexin. The structure of a new compound was characterized as 3,5,7,3',4'-pentahydroxy flavone-3'-O-α-L- rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-O-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1→3)- O-b-D- xylopyranoside, by various colour reactions, spectral analysis and chemical degradations.

A new bioactive allelochemical 1, m.p. 235-36°C, m.f. C 34H42O20, [M]+ 770 (FABMS), has been isolated from methanolic extract of the seeds of Cassia absus Linn, alongwith two known compounds 3, 5, 7, 4-tetrahydroxy-2 5'-dimethoxy flavone and Luteolin. The structure of a new compound has been characterized as 5, 7, 4-trihydroxy-8,3'-dimethoxyflavone-5-O-a- L-rhamnopyranosyl-7-O-β-D- xylopyranosyl-( I -4)O-β-D-galacto- pyranoside by various colour reactions, spectral analysis and chemical degradations. All the secondary plant metabolites are called allelochemicals.

Phytochemical examination of Citrus sinensis juice var. Jaffa resulted in the isolation of 5,7-dihydroxy-3′,4′-dimethoxyflavanone 7-O-rhamnosyl(1→2)glucoside which is a hitherto unreported compound.
