Polonium is a radioactive metallic element discovered in 1898 by Marie Sklodowska Curie and named after her home country, Poland (Latin Polonia). It is a radioactive solid that emits alpha particles and has a resistivity of 44 μohm·cm at 0°C. Its chemical behavior is similar to that of tellurium (Te) and bismuth (Bi), and it coexists with its alpha form over a temperature range of 18°C to 54°C. Polonium has an electronegativity of 1.76.

Uses

Used in Nuclear Research:
Polonium is used as a radioactive material in nuclear research for its unique properties, such as its alpha-emitting nature and its chemical behavior resembling tellurium and bismuth. This makes it valuable for studying various aspects of nuclear reactions and understanding the behavior of radioactive elements.
Used in Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs):
Polonium is used as a fuel source in radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) for its high energy output and long half-life. RTGs convert the heat generated by the radioactive decay of polonium into electricity, providing a reliable power source for space probes, satellites, and remote installations.
Used in Neutron Sources:
Polonium is used as a neutron source in various applications, such as nuclear reactors, research facilities, and industrial processes. The alpha particles emitted by polonium can be used to generate neutrons through interactions with other materials, making it a valuable component in neutron-producing devices.
Used in Medicine:
Polonium is used in medicine for targeted alpha therapy, a form of cancer treatment that utilizes the short-range, high-linear energy transfer of alpha particles to destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Its radioactivity and chemical properties make it a promising candidate for this application.
Used in Anti-Counterfeiting Measures:
Polonium is used in anti-counterfeiting measures, such as the production of security inks and markers. Its radioactivity can be detected using specialized equipment, making it an effective means of verifying the authenticity of documents, currency, and other valuable items.

History

This radioactive metal was also known as radium-F. The name of Polonium derives from “Poland”, the native country of Marie Sklodowska Curie. It was discovered by Marie Curie (Paris, France) in 1898, from its radioactivity. It was independently found by the German chemist Willy Marckwald in 1902 and called radiotellurium. The longest halflife associated with this unstable element is 102 year 209Po.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 7440-08-6 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 7,4,4 and 0 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 0 and 8 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 7440-08:
(6*7)+(5*4)+(4*4)+(3*0)+(2*0)+(1*8)=86
86 % 10 = 6
So 7440-08-6 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
