pH-metric study of the reaction of Cu(II) with the ligand N(N'-benzenesulphonyl glycyl) N-phenyl hydroxyl amine, C6H5SO2NHCH2CON(OH)C6H5, indicated the formation of 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 metal ligand complexes.Stepwise stability constants (K1 and K2) and successive acid dissociation constants (k2NH and k1NH) of the 1 : 2 complex have been determined by following the procedure of Irving and Rossotti.Log K1, log K2, pk2NH and pk1NH are found to be 8.19+/-0.03, 6.71+/-0.03, 10.30+/-0.04 and 11.00+/-0.04 respectively at 30+/-0.5 deg in 50 percent (v/v) water-dioxane medium at ionic strength 0.50 M (NaClO4).The pk2 and pk1 values of the ligand are 9.94+/-0.03 and 11.72+/-0.04 respectively under identical condition.Unusually small enhancement of acidity of the imido (-NH-) group on coordination to Cu(II) has been explained.
