The syntheses of 3,3a-di-(carbomethoxy)-7-methoxy-6-methylbenzohexahydroindane (IIa) and 3,3a-di-(carbomethoxy)-7-methoxybenzohexahydroindane (IIb), which are prospective intermediates for the synthesis of conessine as well as 18-substituted 20-ketosteroids, are described.
