Interaction of 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone (1) with homophthalimides (2a-2c) and other open chain and cyclic compounds containing a reactive methylene group in presence of pyridine is described.The reaction affords 12-substituted naphthindolizinediones (4,5).A plausible reaction mechanism for the formation of the latter compounds is discussed.
