Addition of [Rh(CO)2(μ-Cl)]2 to 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine (Ph2Ppy) yields planar Rh(Ph2Ppy)2(CO)Cl. Reaction of Rh(Ph2Ppy)2(CO)Cl with [Rh(CO)2(μ-Cl)]2 yields Rh2(Ph2Ppy)2(μ-CO)Cl2. Treatment of Rh2(Ph2Ppy)2(μ-CO)Cl2 with sulfur dioxide produces Rh2(Ph2Ppy)2(μ-SO2)Cl 2; this reaction may be reversed by adding carbon monoxide. The structure of Rh2(Ph2Ppy)2(μ-CO)Cl2 has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with two molecules per unit cell of dimensions a = 9.920 (6) A?, b = 12.509 (6) A?, c = 13.860 (7) A?, α = 93.06 (4)°, β = 107.57 (4)°, and γ = 100.01 (4)°. Full-matrix least-squares refinement yielded R = 0.034.
