The Thermal Ene reaction of aldehyde t-butyl- and phenyl- hydrazones with enophiles gave C-trapped azo-adducts which can be diverted into synthetically useful γ-keto-esters, γ-keto-nitriles, γ-alkyl-2-pyrrolidones, and γ-amino-esters.

Phenylhydrazones may exhibit three types of reactivity towards alkenes: nucleophilic attack by carbon, nucleophilic attack by nitrogen and 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition through the azomethine imine ylide.The course of the reaction depends on the nature of the hydrazone and alkene substituents.
