The 2,3-dihydro-1,5-benzothiazepin-4(5H)-ones 1a-i react with sulfuryl chloride to give the 2-chloro-1,5-benzothiazepin-4(5H)-ones 3a-i, which are converted into the corresponding 1,5-benzothiazepine-2,4(3H,5H)-diones 4a-i by conc. sulfuric acid.
