Forbeside E: a novel sulfated sterol glycoside from Asterias forbesi

The structure of forbeside E, a minor constituent of the saponin fraction of the starfish Asterias forbesi, has been identified as the disodium salt of (20R)-5α-pregn-9(11)ene-3β-sulfo-oxy-6α--20-ol, principally by 2D-COSY, DQ COSY, HCORR, and DEPT experiments.Sodium thornasterol-3-O-sulfate has been isolated as a natural product from the same organism.Key words: sulfated sterol glycoside, Asterias forbesi metabolites, sodium thornasterol-3-O-sulfate, asterogenol rearrangement.

A minor constituent of the saponin hydrolysate of the starfishes Asterias forbesi and Asterias vulgaris is shown to be (20R)-5α-pregn-9(11)-ene-3β,6α,20-triol by synthesis from 11-oxoprogesterone.The occurrence of the reduced progesterone side chain could have imlications concerning the origins of progesterone-type compounds in saponin hydrolysates from starfish.
