The photochemical and electrochemical behaviour of (2+) and (2+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, AN = acetonitrile) in AN solutions containing Cl(-) ions has been investigated.Comproportionation of electrochemically-generated (3+) and (+), oxidation by S2O8(2-) of electrochemically generated (+), and reduction by C2O4(2-) of electrochemically-generated (3+) lead to the formation of (+), a ligand substitution product of the starting (2+) complex.Light excitation of (2+) under the same experimental conditions leads to (2+).In all cases the ligand substitution reactions originate from the lowest excited state of (2+).The difference in the products obtained via electron-transfer chemiexcitation or light excitation can be ascribed to the occurrence of a secondary electron-transfer chemiexcitation process which converts (2+) into (+).For (2+), secondary processes are not relevant and the same product, i.e. (+), is obtained on light- or chemi-excitation.
