The E/Z assignment of 1,2,2-tri and tetrasubstituted vinyl phosphorothioates and vinyl phosphates by 1H-n.m.r. investigations is described.While the assignment of 1,2,2-trisubstituted compounds is based on a positive nuclear Overhauser effect which exists between ortho phenyl protons and the vinyl proton of the Z isomer, the configuration of the tetrasubstituted compounds has been determined by lanthanide induced shifts.The effect of different europium coordination in the vinyl phosphorothioates and vinyl phosphates on the paramagnetic shifts is discussed.
