Synthesis of Some Heterocycles via Enamines from 6-Methoxy-1-tetralone and Benzochroman-4-one

Reaction of 6-methoxy-1-tetralone (I) and benzochroman-4-one (II) with morpholine in the presence of TiCl4 gives the respective enamines III and IV in high yields.Treatment of these enamines with aryl isocyanates/isothiocyanates affords the lactams (VIII-X and XIII).The lactam 10-methoxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrodibenzophenanthridin-6-one (VIII) on refluxing with POCl3 for 30 min furnishes the fully aromatised 6-chloro-10-methoxydibenzophenanthridine (XI).Nucleophilic substitution of the halogen atom of 6-chloro-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzophenanthridine (XIV) with hydrazine hydrate yields the corresponding 6-hydrazino derivative (XV) which on treatment with nitrous acid undergoes cyclization to give 4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzotetrazolophenanthridine (XVI).
