Compounds containing methylenedioxyphenyl group undergo selective benzo-1,3-dioxole ring opening with BF3-etherate.The methylene group thus formed can cause dimerisation of the unchanged or other activated molecules present in the reaction mixture.The reaction is of a general nature.
